Machine Readable Zone (MRZ)

A machine readable zone (MRZ) on a government-issued ID refers to the specific physical area on the document where data is encoded in a machine readable format. Data extracted from a document’s MRZ or barcode is compared with data extracted from the front of the document using optical character recognition (OCR) to ensure a match.
